The 2016 Report on International Students Studying in China

In 2016, 440,000 international students from 205 countries and districts were studying in China, with a record high increase of 11.35%.

 
  • China became the most popular Asian destination for international students and student pool optimized remarkable.

In 2016, The total number of international students studying in China added up to 570,000, in which students pursuing an academic degree account for 47.4% of the total number with an increase of 7% compared with that of 2012. The number of postgraduates reached 46,000, covering 14.4% of the total number with an increase of 3.4% compared with 2012.

  • Countries along the Belt and Road sky-rocketed while traditional source countries changed in steadiness

In 2016, the number of international students from 64 countries along the “Belt and Road” was 207,746 with a year-on-year growth of 13.6%, higher than the average growth rate.

According to the report, Beijing, Shanghai and Jiangsu were the 3 most popular destinations for international students. South Korea, the United States and Thailand occupied the top 3 positions among source countries with 70,540, 23,838 and 23,044 students studying in China respectively while Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Thailand enjoyed the biggest ranking rise of 5, 2 and 1 position respectively.

China continues to attract most Asian students among all continents with the number of students from other regions increasing steadily. Africa, to be specific, leads with the highest growth of 23.7% among them all.

  • Chinese language domination was replaced by a more reasonable subject distribution

Compared with 2012, the number of students studying the Chinese Language dropped by 28.6% while education, Science, Engineering and Agriculture students increased by over 100% and Economics, Western Medicine, Literature, Law and Management students by more than 50%. Engineering has the biggest percentage growth of 4.2% and Western Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Management and Chinese language were the most popular subjects among international students.

  • Government scholarship continues attracting international talents.

In 2016, 49,022 students from 183 countries enjoyed government scholarship, which covers 11% of total international students, increasing by 70% compared to 2012.

Pakistan, Mongolia and Russia were the top 3 source countries of scholars. The number of students from the “Belt and Road” countries account for 61% of all scholars, with an increase of 8.4% and, the number of postgraduates covered 69% with an rise of 12%, compared to 2012.
