3 Undergraduate Majors Approved

Date: March 22, 2019

Recently, China’s Ministry of Education announced the results of registration and approval of undergraduate majors. Among them, all of the three majors, applied by University of Jinan in 2018, were approved. These newly approved majors are Cyberspace Security (080911TK) under School of Information Science and Engineering, Robot Engineering (080803T) under School of Electric Engineering, and Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering (081101) under School of Water Conservancy and Environment.

The Cyberspace Security is designed to meet the demands of China’s strategy and integrate informational science with computer science. At present, there are only 143 cyberspace security-related majors in 126 universities in China, accounting for only 10% of the 1200 science and technology universities nationwide. The number of annual related graduates in China is less than 30 thousand, up to a 95% shortfall of the total demand of 700 thousand. As big data and artificial intelligence develop, the demands for cyberspace security personnel will become more urgent.

The Robot Engineering is designed to put into action China’s intelligent manufacturing and development strategy and meet the development trends of robotics. Based on control science and engineering, it combines multiple disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science and technology, thus deepening robot science and engineering disciplines. While it studies such academic issues as robotic intelligent perception, optimal control and system design, this major aims to train high-caliber applied personnel who not only master the basic theory and professional knowledge of robot, but also have engineering practice and innovation abilities.

The Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering is designed to build UJN’s School of Water Conservancy and Environment into a distinctive Shandong base of cultivating applied personnel in water conservancy and hydropower, and water resource and environment. For this purpose, UJN will comprehensively improve its training quality and major construction through the building of professional curriculum system, teaching staff, and experimental platform.

In order to deepen its undergraduate major structure optimization and adjustment and improve its major modernization, UJN formulated the Management Methods of Undergraduate Major Establishment, Adjustment, and Optimization where a dynamic major adjustment and optimization mechanism was built; Schools’ responsibilities of major construction were established; majors were deepened; and the major core competitiveness and personnel training abilities were enhanced. Measures, such as newly establishing, stopping and revoking majors, will be taken to build a major system with sound structure, scientific layout, distinctive characteristics and outstanding advantages. By 2020, the number of UJN’s recruitment majors will be adjusted into about 70. These will help bridge the gap between major establishment and demands of socio-economic development as well as industrial transformation and upgrading. Going forward, while focusing on first-class major construction, UJN will deepen its undergraduate education and teaching reform so as to comprehensively improve its undergraduate education and teaching level and personnel training quality.
